The annual Chisholm Education Awards celebrate and recognise our inspiring students, dedicated educators, and collaborative industry partners.
Nominations are submitted by Chisholm staff, and judging is conducted by independent, objective adjudicators. Award winners are announced at our annual event held mid-year.

- Apprentice of the year
WINNER
Perin Breakell
Certificate III in Carpentry
Mature-aged student Perin Breakell took up a Certificate III in Carpentry to follow her dream to become a carpenter.
Perin is known for her persistence. She asked 50 companies to take her on as an apprentice, but each one knocked her back. This did not deter Perin, and she has found a small family builder who gave her a chance and never looked back. They are now keen to employ more women because Perin is such a great worker.
Perin won the State Apprentice of the Year award at the 2024 Master Builders Association Victoria Awards. She also received the State Apprentice of the Year – Developing Leader Award and the Metro Apprentice of the Year – Developing Leader Award.

Kalilou Kamara
Certificate III in Heavy Mechanical Technologies
Kalilou’s older brothers, who were truck drivers when he was growing up, inspired him to study a Certificate III in Heavy Mechanical Technologies.
Listening to stories of his brothers’ trucks breaking down, Kalilou decided he would become a part of the solution. He works as a heavy vehicle apprentice and wants to make a ‘real difference in the industry.’
One of Kalilou’s best qualities is his keen eye for detail. He completes every task to a high standard.
Kalilou’s strong work ethic impressed his teachers, who have praised his academic success.

Grayson Cooper
Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication Trade
Grayson is living his dream life after completing a Certificate III in Engineering Fabrication Trade.
During his time at Chisholm, he found his passion and made significant contributions to projects such as a biogas delivery system.
These days, Grayson loves getting up in the morning to do his job because he is interested in learning new parts of the trade and never gets bored.
Grayson was ‘over the moon’ when he started his apprenticeship to become a boilermaker. He has positively impacted workplace culture, reducing turnover by promoting respect and collaboration amongst team members.
Grayson is a role model, mentoring junior staff and demonstrating the values of reliability and professionalism.
Kaine Duggan
Certificate III in Electrotechnology
Kaine has followed in his brother’s footsteps to become an electrician.
During his Certificate III in Electrotechnology, Kaine was always the first apprentice to class every morning and the last to leave in the evening. He enjoyed working with his teachers and felt comfortable asking as many questions as he liked.
The extra work Kaine put in earned him more than 90% in his assessments.
In his spare time, Kaine helps other apprentices who need extra support.
Daniel Lucchesi
Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
Daniel's hard work on his Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician has made him a top apprentice. He broke his ankle, which was a major setback, but he turned this into a positive by working hard on his recovery and improving his fitness.
Daniel has brought a sense of camaraderie to the classroom. He helped other apprentices prepare for their Licensed Electrical Examinations. He has made his class a more inclusive and supportive space.
He has also won the highly regarded 2024 WorldSkills Regional competition and will compete in the National WorldSkills Competition in Brisbane this year.
Daniel is an asset to his workplace. His success has inspired his peers to aim high and follow their goals.
Amelia Ross
Certificate III in Landscape Construction
Amelia’s love of the outdoors inspired her to pursue a Certificate III in Landscape Construction.
She worked hard to overcome the challenges in the male-dominated industry, proving how capable she was at doing physical, hands-on work.
A natural leader, Amelia mentored other students through challenging tasks and provided helpful feedback. Her supportive attitude strengthened teamwork within the class.
Amelia is now a qualified landscaper. Demonstrating her ability to take on extra responsibilities, she was elected the workplace’s Occupational Health and Safety Officer 18 months ago.
Clea White
Certificate III in Carpentry
Growing up watching her dad work as a builder inspired Clea to study a Certificate III in Carpentry. Clea is a confident leader who would like to manage a building site in the future.
As a student, Clea has shown great determination and drive. Even breaking her ankle did not stop her. She took on a different role in her workplace and focused on her theory.
Clea has become a role model for women in trades and has been a representative for Chisholm at multiple industry events.
She was awarded an ambassadorship for Bowens, which involves promoting new products and training programs for businesses.

Nelly Mohibi
Higher Education College
Nelly’s passion for teaching has had a positive impact on her students, colleagues and the community. Since joining Chisholm in 2019, she has balanced her teaching role while being a single parent to a child battling cancer.
Supporting students from all backgrounds, including those with sensory challenges, Nelly offers a diverse and inclusive learning space.
Nelly’s journey from Afghanistan to Australia became a children’s book, We Came to Australia Looking for Freedom. She speaks out about social justice, gender equity and family violence.
In addition to her responsibilities, Nelly helps organise and host the Chisholm Wellsprings International Women’s Day event.

Glenn Davies
Higher Education College
Glenn has been vital in the development and launch of the Working with Men stream of the Graduate Certificate in Family Violence. Glenn is the perfect example of the Chisholm values of collaboration, accountability, integrity and respect.
A 98% approval rate across student surveys shows he is one of the students’ favourite teachers. Many of these students say Glenn’s engagement and patience are an important part of their learning journey.
Most of Glenn’s students are now working as men’s behaviour change facilitators.
Glenn networks with agencies across the family violence sector. He met with the Parliamentary Secretary for Men’s Behaviour Change, where he asked for funds and change in the industry.
Suzanne King
Early Childhood Education
Suzanne not only delivers lessons, she helps students build their skills and talents. She offers one-to-one tutoring and is always there to help students with their problems. This includes providing the support that they need outside the classroom.
Managing up to 80 students at a time who are at different levels of the course, Suzanne marks coursework quickly and devotes time providing feedback to each student.
Suzanne offers training to students in remote communities around Victoria. She also mentors new staff, showing examples of excellent teaching and assessment methods.
Belinda Noonan
Early Childhood Education
Belinda recruits and supports trainees in regional communities that lack qualified childhood educators. She has recruited more than 100 trainees to the Department of Education and Training.
Belinda creates individual study pathways to meet the needs of each trainee. She sees their strengths and the areas that need attention.
She visits each trainee at their workplace every month and monitors their progress. While this requires a lot of travel, Belinda is happy to go the distance to support trainees.

Zahra Haidari
EAL student
Removed from school in Afghanistan at age 12 to work, Zahra was desperate to keep learning. Now in Australia, she is a full-time EAL student, eagerly absorbing as much education as possible.
Her new life focus is about giving generations of Afghan women a voice. Chisholm encouraged Zahra to use her talents and bravely share her voice via poetry on social and traditional media.

Chau Thi Bao Nguyen
Certificate III in EAL (Access)
In Vietnam, Chau Nguyen was an experienced accountant. On moving to Australia, she discovered that her qualifications were not recognised.
Determined to start over, she enrolled in English at Chisholm, and then joined the Western Bulldogs footy team fan club.
The Certificate III In EAL (Access) has given her confidence, new friendships, drive and a thirst to learn more.
Kylie Wilson
Certificate II in General Education for Adults
Kylie is a warm, engaging leader who brought out the best in her fellow students in the Certificate II in General Education for Adults by always putting them first. Initially, she was filled with doubt about her studies but thanks to her perseverance and continual encouragement from teachers, she excelled.
Kylie’s commitment resulted in her achieving a sought-after nursing cadetship and a new career pathway.

Thi Thu Hang Huynh
Certificate II in EAL (Access)
Hang is a qualified pediatrician from Vietnam who moved to Australia to start a new life. Shy, withdrawn and unable to communicate with staff and fellow students, she started English classes online amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, while also caring for two young children and extended family.
She completed Certificate II In EAL (Access), and her confidence has blossomed.

Rose Deng
Bachelor of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs
Rose turned her struggles with mental health and substance abuse into something positive. She started studying for a Bachelor of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs.
Rose wanted to learn more so she could teach her South Sudanese community about these topics. She is looking to break down the stigma around mental health and drug and alcohol abuse in her community.
Her teachers were impressed by how Rose balanced schoolwork, community service and personal challenges. She is always ready to guide her peers, join in meaningful talks and encourage those in need.
Rose’s leadership in class and efforts in youth and mental health advocacy have helped those around her.
Journalists and community leaders have also seen Rose’s contributions: she has featured in two newspaper articles emphasising the importance of mental health awareness in the South Sudanese community.

Umanda Fernando
Bachelor of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs
Umanda studied a Bachelor of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs to begin a career in counselling. She has gained skills and confidence, and is ready to move into her dream job.
During her studies, Umanda secured two highly competitive placements: one with La Trobe Community Health Services and another with the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
Umanda enjoyed the small class groups at Chisholm because students have easier access to their teachers. She said this course has helped her grow and boosted her passion for her future career.

Annie Holborow
Graduate Certificate in Family Violence (Prevention and Practice)
Annie wants to help children and young people by creating a service for those facing family violence. That's why she completed a Graduate Certificate in Family Violence (Prevention and Practice).
She is a member of the Victim Survivors’ Advisory Council (VSAC) and chair of the Children and Young People’s VSAC focus group. Annie has shared her insights on children and young people's experiences with family violence.
Annie's long-term goal is to establish an organisation for children and young people experiencing family violence. This shows her commitment to creating lasting change in the community.

Madison Killeen
Graduate Certificate in Family Violence (Prevention and Practice)
Madison wants to make a difference in her career after finishing a Graduate Certificate in Family Violence (Prevention and Practice). She is now continuing her studies with a Master's in Social Work
Studying has given Madison the confidence to refer to her experience in a professional setting.
Her primary work is in family law, where she addresses family violence. She works with victim-survivors and perpetrators, to make sure legal protections and support systems are accessible.
Madison wants to ensure those impacted by family violence receive the support and protection they need.
Erin Platt
Graduate Certificate in Family Violence (Working with Men)
Erin completed the Graduate Certificate in Family Violence (Working with Men), enabling her to continue her work in the family violence prevention sector.
Since completing the course, Erin has worked one-to-one with men in the sector, including fathers who choose to use violence. She provides risk assessments of participants. She trains staff to work with men and presents at The Orange Door.
Erin has also presented on male perpetrated violence at the 2024 Anglicare Australia National Conference in Newcastle.
Shivam Yadav
Bachelor of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs
During his Bachelor of Community Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs studies, Shivam developed his skills to become an excellent community services worker.
Shivam was focused, receptive to feedback on assessments and friendly to instructors and fellow students. He excelled in the course, achieving well-earned distinctions.
His teacher believes Shivam is ready to work with complex clients in a people-centered, evidence-based manner.

Charlie Marsh
Certificate II in Computer Assembly and Repair
Charlie finds technology fascinating and enjoys figuring out how it all works. He believes ‘passion can take you anywhere as long as it’s somewhere you want to be.’ It is his passion that led to Charlie’s nomination.
Charlie loved the environment at Chisholm. His positive attitude helped other students struggling to complete assessments.
He has big goals for his future and is ready to take the next step. Since finishing his Certificate II in Computer Assembly and Repair, he hopes to study a Bachelor of Computer Science.
Charlie’s dream is to own his own cyber security company.

Charles Butler
Certificate II in Engineering Studies
Charlie is studying a Certificate II in Engineering Studies to achieve an apprenticeship in boilermaking and welding. He wants to become a first-class welder.
Charlie is an outstanding student. He has shown growth, resilience and dedication during his studies.
Charlie secured a Structured Workplace Learning placement with an engineering company. When he finished the program, the company employed him at their fabrication workshop. He still works there a year later.
He earned second place in the 2024 VETiS WorldSkills VR Welding Competition and welded a sculpture of a deer head for the Kemppi Weld Art Competition.
Elijah Keath
Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship — Carpentry
Elijah’s love of creating and building led him to study a Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship – Carpentry.
Elijah impressed his teachers with his technical skills and initiative when bringing in tools he had built or fixed. He was always ready to help other students.
In 2024, Elijah earned second place at the state and regional WorldSkills Australia Competitions for VETiS Carpentry.
Connor Kiernan
Certificate II in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology
After completing his Certificate II in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology , Connor is looking for work as a furniture maker.
The design on his woodwork project impressed the teachers and was well above the industry standard.
Connor has been the perfect role model for his peers and has a natural talent for furniture making. He has shown great leadership in the classroom by mentoring classmates and helping them with difficult tasks.
While pursuing his career as a furniture maker, Connor is in training to become a manager at a local fast-food store where he has been working for three years.
Neda Mozafari
Certificate III Health Services Assistance
Neda has completed her Certificate III Health Services Assistance and looks forward to studying a Certificate III in Dental Assisting.
Neda’s dream is to become a dental nurse and one day go to university. Chisholm has been a pathway to Neda’s success, and she encourages her community to do the same.
She is graduating from her secondary school VCE Vocational Major program with a Certificate III qualification.
English is Neda’s second language, and she improved her communications skills during her study at Chisholm. This was especially impressive when learning medical terminology.
Neda wants to make a positive impact on people’s lives and support her family.

Danelle Hendy
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
Danelle saw the excellent work of the educators at her son’s kindergarten and felt inspired to start a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. She now works at that same kindergarten in rural Victoria.
A mother of seven, Danelle was recently widowed and wanted to find a job to support her family. Danelle’s employer admires how she balances her work, study and young family. She is a dedicated and passionate employee.
Danelle is an inspiration to her community, colleagues, family and children.

Mia Calleja
Certificate III in Dental Assisting - Traineeship
At 15, Mia took a work experience role at her local dentist. When she was in Year 11, she knew she wanted to continue this career path and become a dental assistant. Her school tried to talk her out of it, but Mia’s family supported her decision.
A month after turning 16, Mia began a traineeship with the Certificate III in Dental Assisting – Traineeship. She continued to work full time as a trainee dental assistant for a year.
Mia is the youngest trainee to enrol in this course at Chisholm and one of the most successful. She always completed her work well before the deadline and to a high standard.
Mia is now a qualified dental assistant.
Camille Gammeri
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
Camille always knew she wanted to work with children. Before starting her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, she was sure of her path.
She coached children in sport and felt maternal towards her little sister, who was born when Camille was 11 years old.
Camille enjoys supporting children with their behavioural needs and personal development. In the early learning centre where she works, she creates a warm and safe space for children. She was recently nominated for a Workplace Hero award.
Camille works full time and takes care of her two children while studying. Despite this juggle, she is one of Chisholm’s highest-performing trainees.

Jade Gunn
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
Jade has always wanted a career and a sense of purpose, which she found while studying the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care traineeship.
After continuing her studies in the Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, Jade now plans to complete a double degree with a focus on spectrum-based behaviours.
Jade is passionate about early childhood education and advocating for children’s rights. She has helped many younger trainees by mentoring them as they enter the workplace.
She enjoys connecting with children in diverse and low socio-economic communities, and offering support to parents.
Jade will be a wonderful asset to the early childhood education and care sector.
Amber Woolley
Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation -Traineeship
Amber works as a swim coach at her local swimming centre but dreams of becoming a manager of a swimming centre one day. Her traineeship, which she is doing with her employer, will set her on the path to achieve her goal.
Overcoming obstacles related to her dyslexia, Amber has shown commitment and a strong work ethic while studying the Certificate III In Sport, Aquatics and Recreation — Traineeship. She shows that with determination and support, anything is possible.
Amber brings positivity to every swim class she teaches. She has a strong connection with young children and always receives positive feedback from students and parents.

Michelle Andrews
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
Michelle has shown strength and determination while studying for her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. She finished her studies while raising her children and working at the café at the Dandenong campus.
Michelle has a natural talent for educating others. In class, she shared her knowledge in supporting victims of domestic violence. Her sensitivity when tackling this topic has been her strength.
Michelle’s warm and positive attitude has helped students deal with tough emotions and topics in class. She is an enthusiastic classmate, encouraging her peers and creating a safe space for open discussions.

Rachel Beattie
Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
Rachel’s love of teaching began in her role as a swimming instructor teaching children from birth up to 12 years old. She loved teaching three- and four-year-olds in the Learn to Swim program.
When her health circumstances changed and she could no longer work at the swimming pool, Rachel pursued a career change that ensured she could still work with young children.
Since completing her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, Rachel is now studying the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.
Aiming to take on supervisory and managerial roles, Rachel has a bright future ahead in the early childhood education and care sector.
Laura Feddersen
Diploma of Nursing
Laura swapped her corporate career to study a Diploma of Nursing at the Frankston campus.
As a mature-aged student, Laura was nervous about returning to the classroom, but she always brought a positive and inspiring energy to each session.
Laura earned her colleagues’ respect with her teamwork, professionalism and strong work ethic.
She won Ramsay Health’s 2024 Nursing Cadet Student of the Year Award, when she was selected from 150 students.
The positive and supportive environment Laura created has made a great impact on her workplace and the broader community.
Tanya Kathleen
Certificate III in Horticulture
Tanya is delighted she completed a Certificate III in Horticulture. The course has helped her secure a high-profile job in the industry.
Tanya represented Chisholm at the 2025 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show, where she won the People’s Choice Award in the Achievable Garden category for her Live in Joy installation. She helps future students by documenting her work with the show.
Volunteering her time to speak with new horticulture students, Tanya offers insights into the interesting work they can do with their studies.
Naomi Lockwood-Hickey
Certificate III in Horticulture
Naomi has gone from strength to strength during her Certificate III in Horticulture. She was often the first to class, even though she had to take two buses to the Chisholm Mornington campus three days a week.
Naomi always helped her classmates and brought them together to achieve group goals while creating a safe space within class. One of her best achievements was mentoring a student to develop their computer skills. Each week, Naomi helped them until they felt comfortable and supported them with a class presentation.
Naomi’s hard work paid off when she was awarded the 2024 Nursery and Garden Industry Victoria Horticulture Student of the Year.
Nooria Neda
Certificate III in General Education for Adults
After personal tragedy, Nooria decided to restart her education in Australia with a Certificate III in General Education for Adults. She moved here with her two small children in 2022 to begin a new life.
Nooria studied a Bachelor of Law and Political Science in her homeland of Afghanistan. She wants to study a master's in these subjects in Australia.
A determined and focused student, Nooria rebuilt herself through Chisholm and is a strong advocate for migrant education.
She has interviewed women and girls since she fled Afghanistan, and collected their stories. She hopes to publish her book, Defiant Daughters, to raise awareness of the issues Afghan women face.
Nooria is an asset to both the Afghan and wider Australian communities.
Lexi Waller
Diploma of Graphic Design
Lexi did not listen to anyone who told her that studying a Diploma of Graphic Design was a ‘waste of time.’ She is delighted that she trusted her motivation as this course has set her up for meaningful work in an industry she loves.
Lexi thrived when working on industry projects, such as a road safety project with the Re:Act program. She represented Chisholm, as one of only three Australian representatives, at the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety in Morocco. This has raised Chisholm’s profile, including our graphic design offerings.
Lexi won the Outstanding Student Award in 2023.

Embraced is a leader in social and community project design. Its purpose is to create inclusive, thriving communities by connecting generations through art, culture and creativity.
In 2024, Embraced engaged Chisholm’s VCE Vocational Major (VM) students to develop the Songs for You music project. This project, conducted as part of the VCE VM literacy stream, enriched the students' Year 12 journey at TAFE. It included an innovative approach to learning about advocacy, fostering personal growth and confidence.
The initiative also brought students and aged care residents together through music. They met regularly to share life stories and form genuine friendships. Students composed and produced songs celebrating the older adults’ lives. The project demonstrated the power of storytelling through music. It helped both age groups share their skills, boost their confidence and provided joy and connection for aged care residents.
This unique collaboration of creativity, empathy, and discipline provided participants with a well-rounded educational experience that has prepared them for the future and challenged preconceptions of different generations.
Wellsprings for Women
Wellsprings for Women is a centre where women gather and feel empowered. They offer safe spaces for women who need customised, culturally appropriate and responsive program and services, to support them to live their lives with dignity. It hosts programs to address women’s physical, emotional, spiritual, recreational, educational and skill-based needs.
Chisholm’s Higher Education College (HEC) has worked with Wellsprings for Women for many years. Wellsprings has played an important role in delivering our International Women’s Day events.
The CEO of Wellsprings sits on the Industry Advisory Committee for the Graduate Certificate in Family Violence. She offers her expertise and ensures the course remains relevant to the industry. The organisation offers regular placement opportunities to HEC students and has employed numerous Chisholm alumni.
Greater Dandenong Youth and Family Services
Youth and Family Services works with young people and their families who live, work, study or have a connection to the City of Greater Dandenong.
The service comprises of three teams: Family Support, Youth Engagement and Participation, and Youth and Community Development. They have been working with Chisholm’s Art and Design students for the past 20 years, through art exhibitions and partnerships.
In 2024, the Youth and Family Services team initiated a different approach by collaborating on a grass roots project. The project centred around social media and body image, with a peer-to-peer social media campaign designed by our VETDSS Design Fundamentals students. This project was an end-to-end design project and was published via Dandenong City Council platforms and on other third-party social media.
Mackay Australia Pty Ltd
Mackay Australia Pty Ltd is Australia’s largest designer, manufacturer and distributor of engineered rubber and rubber composite products. Its products are used in trains, trams, cars, trucks, buses, high-speed catamarans, commercial marine vessels, frigates, submarines, armoured vehicles, guided weapons, rockets and helicopters.
Mackay plays a vital role in strengthening local communities through its commitment to employment, inclusion and sustainable manufacturing.
In the past two years, Mackay has supported Chisholm’s Automotive department. They have funded uniforms and equipment for students and staff participating in the 2024 WorldSkills competition. Mackay also donated products to support hands-on learning, ensuring industry-ready graduates. This also offers students the opportunity to work with high-quality Australian-made products.
Monash Health
Monash Health is the largest public health service in Melbourne’s southeast, including Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital and Cranbourne Community Hospital.
Chisholm’s partnership with Monash Health reinforces the importance of industry collaboration. It ensures Monash Health staff receive high-quality, sector-specific training that enhances their ability to maintain safe and compliant work environments.
Chisholm has participated in multiple Career at Cranbourne Community Hospital events and collaborates with Monash Health to deliver Health and Safety Representative training. This gives healthcare staff the necessary skills to promote workplace safety and prioritise best practise in patient care.
The partnership supports career development for both healthcare staff and education professionals.
Weld Australia
Weld Australia is the main body that represents Australia’s welding industry. A not-for-profit member-based organisation, it provides members with access to industry, research, education and certification.
Chisholm sits on the Victorian Branch Committee and together we have worked closely to deliver industry leading events, training programs and engagement initiatives. The partnership has improved learning opportunities by providing students access to new technology and ensuring graduates are job ready.
Employers actively seek Chisholm-trained welders due to their high competency levels, and Weld Australia’s endorsement further enhances employment prospects.

Bonnie Inkster has excelled in her apprenticeship with leading motorsports team, Walkinshaw Andretti United, pursuing her passion for welding and fabrication.
Having leapt into the male dominated motor sports industry, Bonnie is now a pivotal part of the team, travelling to races throughout the country.
Due to a hearing impairment, she has developed unique skills to improve her communication with teammates and adapt her welding techniques to achieve flawless results.

Callum consistently shone as the top student within his Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade Apprenticeship class, showcasing exceptional quality of work.

Chau Thi Bao Nguyen

In Vietnam, Chau Nguyen was an experienced accountant. On moving to Australia, she discovered that her qualifications were not recognised.
Determined to start over, she enrolled in English at Chisholm, and then joined the Western Bulldogs footy team fan club.
The Certificate III In EAL (Access) has given her confidence, new friendships, drive and a thirst to learn more.
Kylie Wilson
Certificate II in General Education for Adults
Kylie is a warm, engaging leader who brought out the best in her fellow students in the Certificate II in General Education for Adults by always putting them first. Teachers described Alejandra as hard working and committed to her studies while empowering her fellow students to do their best. The co-winner of Chisholm’s major international student scholarship in 2023, Alejandra achieved high distinctions for most of her subjects, despite COVID lockdowns preventing in-person classes during 2021 and 2022.

Gurjot originally studied nursing at university but, like many, turned to TAFE for a more targeted and applied degree. A debilitating workplace accident left her temporarily unable to move, suffering depression and unable to attend class. She is grateful Chisholm staff never gave up on her. She returned to study with a renewed passion to make a difference in the mental health sector.

To his credit, he has been offered a school-based apprenticeship at GT & JA Jones Engineering where he is excelling at fabrication and welding.

In Year 11, Aston realised the traditional high school pathway was not for him. Instead, he chose a VCE Vocational Major through Chisholm TAFE.

Mahbooba Assadi has a sweet dream to infuse the flavours of her native Afghanistan into the delicate sweets she creates. She previously tried many courses but was not at peace with her choices until she enrolled in the Certificate III in Patisserie at Dandenong campus. Her skills in sugar art have won her many awards, including first place at the Royal Melbourne Show.

Reza Bakhsi enrolled in Berwick Campus’s Diploma of Sport last year after his family arrived as refugees from Afghanistan, via Indonesia. His dream is to become a sports physio – he is already a champion swimmer - his competitive mindset guaranteed his success during his Diploma. Despite limited English, Reza excelled at his studies and proved invaluable at bringing classmates together.
Scott Bartils
Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)
While running his roofing business, Scott mentored many young men to reach out to support services for their addiction issues. He became so passionate about helping, he decided to undertake a Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs at Chisholm.
He was apprehensive about returning to studying after 25 years and using technology. Instead of seeing that as a barrier, he saw it as an opportunity for growth and learning.

In less than three years, Sohaila has gone from learning English as a new migrant in Australia, to studying a Diploma of Community Services student, and working in multiple volunteer roles to support other multicultural members of the community to settle and make connections.
Sohaila is a dedicated volunteer with Chisholm’s Student Ambassador program, the Centre for Multicultural Youth, UCan2 and headspace’s Youth Advisory Group.

Tina is a shining example of how art can be used to tell stories, express values and feelings in a respectful way. During her Certificate IV in Visual Arts studies, she suffered amnesia from a serious car accident, and has had ongoing worry for her family in Palestine.
Through her artwork, Tina wants to inform the public about the Palestine conflict from her perspective.

Ian Predl
Virginia Simmons Outstanding Contribution Award
Congratulations to Ian Predl, the winner of the inaugural Virginia Simmons Outstanding Contribution to Chisholm Award.
This award is named in honour of Virginia Simmons – who was an inspirational leader and innovator in vocational and tertiary education and training. She served as CEO of Chisholm for nine years and was responsible for establishing the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.
With this award, Ian’s esteemed service to education and training has been acknowledged, particularly through his contributions to Chisholm Institute, the establishment of the technical and further education system in Victoria, and to the community.
He has had a long involvement with Chisholm Institute and an esteemed career in tertiary education and training since the 1970s.
In the ‘70s, he held the positions of Vice Principal of Emily McPherson College and then became the Principal of Frankston TAFE College – later to become part of Chisholm Institute.
In the 1980s, he served as CEO of Victoria’s TAFE SYSTEM, Chairperson of the TAFE Board, and Chair of the National TAFE Statistics and Curriculum Committees.
In his retirement, Ian has served on many boards and committees, including the Council of Chisholm Institute from 2002 – 2008, and as a Trustee on the Board of the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation for nearly 10 years.
In 2006, he was awarded a Member of the Order (AM) in the Queen’s birthday Honours, for service to education and training, particularly through contributions to the establishment of the technical and further education system in Victoria, and to the community.
Ian was presented with the inaugural Virginia Simmons Outstanding Contribution Award at Chisholm’s 10th annual Education Awards gala dinner by Virginia’s brother, Bill Simmons. Ian expressed his appreciation for what he now considers his swansong of 60+ years serving the education community.

EQUANS ANZ is a leading provider of multi-technical building services, including audio visual, mechanical, fire, communication, and electrical solutions, across 17 countries. It provides excellent technical know-how in design, installation and maintenance to support energy, industrial and digital transitions for clients.
Equans supports Chisholm’s ongoing strategy to increase training participation in Melbourne’s south-east and supports career pathways for women (and those who identify as female) in non-traditional occupations.
Jayco Corporation
Jayco Corporation is Australia’s leading RV designer, manufacturer and distributor of RVs, including camper trailers, caravans, campervans and motorhomes. Established in 1975, Jayco has multiple facilities, two of which are located in Dandenong South, Victoria, employing more than 1,100 employees.
Chisholm delivers a range of accredited virtual training programs across the Jayco business nationwide. Chisholm also developed a rolling enrolment platform for a leadership and management qualification, which is part of Jayco’s professional development program for business leaders.
South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA)
SEMMA is the peak industry association representing more than 230 leading manufacturing companies located in South East Melbourne. It provides a strong, clear voice for manufacturers, and participates in the ongoing regional and national debate regarding the critical need for an innovative and sustainable manufacturing community.
The two organisations have long worked together to support jobseekers into employment and training through collaboration with Chisholm’s Jobs Victoria Engineering Project.
Community Partnerships
Foundation Learning Centre
The Foundation Learning Centre supports those members of our community who are the most vulnerable, marginalised and educationally disadvantaged. It aims to provide a safe and engaging learning environment that nurtures and supports the individual journey for each participant.
The Learning Centre program, ‘Gaining the Edge’, delivers job-ready skills to Chisholm’s Early Childhood Trainees from the Jobs Victoria, DE Traineeship Project, before they commence employment.
Living and Learning
Living Learning at Pakenham supports those who are disadvantaged or vulnerable to set and achieve realistic career goals. It creates a safe, inclusive space, where individuals feel valued, heard and empowered to explore their career options.
Living Learning works closely with the Chisholm Skills and Jobs Centre to provide quality career counselling to Chisholm students. Through this collaboration, career counselling services help improve the economic social wellbeing of our students.
