Tom has always been drawn to a career in designing things that serve a purpose. With a natural creative bent and inspired by his carpenter father, he dreamed of becoming an architect. To begin that journey, Tom chose to enrol in the Certificate II in Furnishing alongside his VCE.
The course provided Tom with clear requirements and structures, which helped him develop his confidence and the ability to make sound decisions. His teachers praise him for his determination and always giving things a go. Throughout his studies Tom also learnt how to overcome challenges and setbacks, skills that saw him thrive in the workplace and his personal life as well.
One of Tom’s proudest achievements was building a wooden chair from scratch. The project challenged him to learn new techniques, solve problems and bring an idea to life.
Balancing his VCE and Certificate II has strengthened Tom’s time‑management skills, helping him juggle a busy schedule that includes competitive volleyball, coaching and volunteering at a lifesaving club. His commitment to his community reflects the same dedication he brings to his studies. As Tom himself says, “I've always been drawn to the challenges that push me to grow”.
Helping his dad build houses has sparked Tom’s passion for sustainable, cost‑effective construction, and he hopes to continue this work in the future.
Tom is a finalist in the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Secondary Student of the Year.
