Monica was keen to find a career that suited her curious mind. With a love for drawing and an interest in design and mathematics, Monica decided to complete the Certificate II in Engineering Studies alongside her VCE.
Monica thrived in the practical TAFE environment, finding the setting more inclusive, engaging and socially connected than traditional schooling. She discovered her passion for engineering and an appreciation of how things are designed and built. This shift helped her learn while also helping her feel happier and more self-confident. As one of the few girls in her class, she has become a vocal advocate for diversifying the trade. Monica is committed to inspiring more women to consider studying engineering.
Throughout her studies, Moncia built strong foundational skills from scratch, adapting to the physical, technical and safety demands of workshop training. During her placement with a structural welding and fabrication company, Monica demonstrated a strong work ethic and collaborated well with others.
Her success and determination were recognised when she was awarded the 2025 Weld Australia Secondary School Student of the Year. She was also chosen to compete in WorldSkills Victoria AR Welding. This opportunity allowed her to showcase her skills and willingness to embrace new challenges.
Monica credits Chisholm with helping her to think differently and rediscover her love of learning. She is now studying architecture at university, continuing to build on the strong technical foundation she developed through her VET studies.
Monica is a finalist in the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Secondary Student of the Year.
