Sethuki always dreamed of becoming a doctor. But before going to university, she wanted to learn some hands-on foundational skills from teachers with medical experience. This inspired her to complete a Certificate III in Health Service Assistance alongside her VCE.

Throughout her studies, Sethuki demonstrated exceptional aptitude in both theory and clinical bedside care. She approached every class with curiosity, asked thoughtful questions and helped create a culture of respect and professionalism. Her practical training, such as monitoring vital signs in simulated clinical settings, helped her better understand the realities of patient care.

Most importantly, the course opened her eyes to the various roles within the healthcare system. She valued learning the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology and clinical practice, which strengthened her commitment to pursuing a career in medicine.

Outside the classroom, Sethuki has spent five years as an Australian Air Force Cadet and is an active volunteer in her local community. These experiences have shaped her, building resilience, an ability to perform under pressure and understanding how to work with people from diverse backgrounds. These skills are already helping her excel as both a learner and a future healthcare professional.

Now studying a degree in paramedicine, Sethuki is continuing her pathway toward becoming a doctor with the Air Force. In the future, she hopes to focus on humanitarian work, with a dream to contribute to global organisations such as Doctors Without Borders.

“I want to use the skills I achieved to do good,” said Sethuki.

Sethuki is a finalist in the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Secondary School Student of the Year.
