There’s more than one way to get there

A student’s first preference doesn’t have to determine their final destination. Depending on their goals, interests and results, there may be different courses or qualification levels that can lead towards the same career.

When discussing options with a student, it can help to consider:

  • What careers or industries interest them?
  • What kind of learning suits them?
  • Are they interested in practical, hands-on learning?
  • Are there different courses that could lead towards the same career?
  • Could a certificate or diploma provide a pathway towards their longer-term goal?
  • Would an apprenticeship or traineeship be a suitable option?
  • Are there entry requirements or prerequisites they need to meet?
  • Could previous study or experience contribute towards their course?

Students can explore options across:

  • certificates and diplomas
  • higher education
  • apprenticeships and traineeships
  • pathways between VET and higher education
  • recognition of prior learning and credit transfer, where applicable.
