After graduating from Year 12 in the Philippines, Aliah moved to Melbourne to pursue her study goals. Studying the Diploma of Nursing at Chisholm helped her build practical healthcare skills, grow in confidence, and develop the knowledge needed for a successful and rewarding career in nursing.

Aliah understood that studying overseas could provide new opportunities and began considering where an international education might lead. Melbourne stood out because Aliah’s aunt and grandparents lived in the city and offered to support Aliah’s studies.

Aliah’s aunt had studied nursing at Chisholm in 2007 and recommended Chisholm as a place to begin a nursing journey. After researching the options, Aliah chose the Diploma of Nursing. Moving directly from Year 12 into university felt daunting, so the Diploma offered Aliah an opportunity to build knowledge, practical skills and confidence before continuing to a bachelor degree.

Moving to a new country came with uncertainty. Aliah wondered whether adjusting to a different environment, meeting new people and managing life away from home would be possible. Support from Aliah’s family, here in Melbourne and back home, made the transition easier.

While her first days at Chisholm felt daunting, connecting with welcoming classmates helped Aliah build confidence, form friendships and feel at home.

 Speaking with other students showed Aliah that adjusting to a new learning environment was a shared experience. These early connections created a sense of belonging and helped Aliah feel part of the community on campus.

Support from Chisholm staff and teachers also played an important role in Aliah’s journey. The library and Student Services offered patient, practical guidance, while approachable teachers encouraged Aliah to ask questions and seek clarification. This support helped Aliah navigate study with greater confidence.

The opportunity to learn from feedback has been one of the most valuable parts of Aliah’s course. Detailed guidance from teachers and assessors has helped Aliah understand mistakes, improve assessments and strengthen nursing knowledge. This approach has prepared Aliah for clinical placements and shown that learning is an ongoing process.

Communication has been another significant area of growth. Chisholm encouraged Aliah to ask questions and speak up when something was unclear. During clinical placements, developing this skill helped Aliah better understand procedures and provide safer care. Supportive teachers and staff created an environment where Aliah felt comfortable seeking guidance.

Community has also shaped Aliah’s experience. Meeting classmates from different backgrounds has allowed Aliah to learn about other cultures while sharing Filipino traditions, food and values. These connections have strengthened Aliah’s appreciation for Filipino culture and highlighted the benefits of studying in a multicultural environment.

“Chisholm has taught me that asking questions, accepting feedback and continuously improving are essential qualities in nursing. These are skills that I’ll continue to use throughout my career.”

After completing the Diploma of Nursing, Aliah plans to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing at university. Aliah’s long-term goal is to become a paediatric or neonatal intensive care nurse and build a meaningful career caring for children and babies.
