Having spent 30 years as a dental nurse specialising in paediatric health, Tina felt it was time to refresh her skills and expertise, so she enrolled in the Certificate III in Dental Assisting. Not wanting to rely on Recognition of Prior Learning (receiving credit for previous experience), Tina completed the course in full, so she was confident in current technologies and practices.
As a mature‑age student returning to study after many years, Tina initially found the digital learning environment challenging. However, through determination, perseverance and a little support from her teenage son, she quickly built her proficiency and excelled academically. She was highly valued for her leadership, her willingness to support others and her calm, kind approach.
In the classroom, Tina willingly shared her extensive private and public health sector knowledge with peers, offering real‑life workplace scenarios and insights into the practical realities of public dental care. Her generosity, patience and professionalism enriched the learning experience for everyone around her.
Tina has become a trusted expert, educating the community in paediatric oral health. Looking ahead, she hopes to further her studies so she can continue supporting children and their families: “my children have seen me become a lifelong learner and how anyone at any age can study”.
Tina is a finalist in the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Trainee of the Year.
