From the classroom to the frontline, Drew uses his training to make a life-saving impact.

For Drew Beattie, nursing is more than a career, it’s a way to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. After choosing Chisholm’s Diploma of Nursing to build his skills and explore a future in healthcare, he developed the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience that would prepare him for some extraordinary moments in his life.

Throughout his studies, Drew was supported by Chisholm’s teachers, clinical teams and support staff, who helped him build the practical skills and confidence needed to succeed both in the classroom and in real-world healthcare settings. Whether he needed advice, assistance with research and assignments from library staff, or guidance organising clinical placements, Drew felt supported by a network that genuinely cared about student outcomes.

When Drew reflects back on what he enjoyed most about his time at Chisholm he says:

The great teachers who are willing to help and the hands-on lab experience you gain.

Today, Drew volunteers as an Enrolled Nurse and First Responder with St John Ambulance while continuing his Bachelor of Nursing studies. His dedication to serving the community was recognised when he received St John Ambulance’s First Responder of the Year award, acknowledging both his extensive volunteer service and his actions in emergency situations.

One of Drew's most significant contributions came while volunteering at the Melbourne Marathon in 2025. After responding to two cardiac arrests within 10 minutes, he helped save the life of marathon runner Lewis Neate by performing CPR and using a defibrillator alongside fellow responders.

Both patients survived, and Drew credits the confidence and preparation gained through his studies and training for helping him stay calm under pressure when it mattered most.

Recently reuniting with Lewis, Drew reflected on how his education and volunteering experience complemented one another. The skills he gained through training at Chisholm helped prepare him for high-pressure situations, while his frontline experiences reinforced and strengthened the skills he was learning as a nursing student.

Drew says:

My studies at Chisholm added to the knowledge and confidence I gained through my St John training. When put in those situations, many people may freeze from fear or lack of preparation, so I was lucky.

Now working in healthcare and pursuing a career in emergency nursing, Drew continues to volunteer at major events and supports his community whenever he can. His story highlights how Chisholm equips students with the skills and confidence to create a real impact, not only in their careers, but also in the lives of the people around them.
