Taryn began his career working with Victoria Police, spending a decade on the frontline responding to a wide range of incidents, including family violence. Through his work, he developed a deep understanding of the complexities of the matter, recognising patterns, systematic gaps and the need for stronger, meaningful support.

With a strong desire to effect change, Taryn decided to pivot his career and pursue further study. He enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Family Violence, determined to build the knowledge and skills needed to make safer and more accountable systems.

In the classroom, Taryn was well-regarded for his teamwork, encouragement and willingness to support others. He approached learning with empathy, accountability and reflective practice, qualities that shape both his professional and personal growth.

Through his studies and experience as a police officer, Taryn evolved his understanding of family violence, shifting responsibility away from victim‑survivors and putting the onus on perpetrators.

While proud of his strong academic results, Taryn considers his personal growth and renewed sense of purpose to be his greatest achievements from his time at Chisholm.

Now in a leadership role at The Orange Door, Taryn applies the frameworks and knowledge gained through his studies to provide specialised guidance and support. He influences operational and statewide practice, strengthens referral pathways and mentors new practitioners. His work enhances collaboration across agencies and contributes to safer, more effective responses for families.

In the future, Taryn hopes to influence national policy using feminist frameworks, continue teaching and coaching practitioners, and challenge gendered narratives. Above all, he is committed to being a strong role model for his daughters. “I’d like them to know that women can do anything. I just want to change those gendered narratives.”

Taryn is a finalist for the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Higher Education Student of the Year.
