For Tanvir, studying engineering in Melbourne has become more than just following a passion for problem solving. It has been a chance to grow, connect, and build confidence in a new country. Tanvir’s experience at Chisholm has helped turn curiosity into capability - and along the way, found a community that feels like home.
Originally from Bangladesh, Tanvir came to Australia with an interest in solving complex problems and pursuing a future in engineering. When he discovered Chisholm’s Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical and Manufacturing), Tanvir started with theory, and through practical, hands-on training, understands how his training connects to real industry practice. From the beginning, Tanvir was drawn to the idea of learning in well-equipped engineering labs, working directly with machinery, and developing skills that would help him in his engineering career.
Throughout his studies, Tanvir has enjoyed the practical side of engineering including experimenting in the lab, applying theory in real time, and working through complex challenges alongside his classmates. The hands-on training approach has helped him understand how each concept links to real-world applications, giving him clarity, confidence, and a sense of direction in what he is learning.
Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, Ravi Rami, explains that the course is designed to give students strong practical experience and genuine industry readiness. With an extensive background in the engineering field, Ravi is passionate about helping students understand how engineering theory translates into real-world practice.
As part of the degree, students complete industry placements supported by a dedicated team who help them secure relevant roles. Chisholm’s strong partnerships with the engineering sector also mean students regularly hear from guest speakers who share insights into industry trends.
Outside the classroom, Tanvir has found a welcoming and diverse community. He has made friends from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and enjoys learning from their experiences. Being part of the student committee has strengthened Tanvir’s sense of belonging. Tanvir serves as the treasurer, helps organise student events, and recently coordinated an engineering industry night that brought professionals onto campus to share their knowledge and skills to current students. These experiences have helped him build confidence, develop leadership skills, and feel more connected.
Once he completes his degree, Tanvir hopes to begin his career as a mechanical engineer to build industry experience. In the long term, he dreams of starting his own business to make a positive impact on society.
For International students considering Chisholm as their choice of study provider, Tanvir states:
“Chisholm has really helped me in my studies because whenever I need help, the teachers are always there to help. We have a well-equipped lab, so if I need some hands-on learning, the teacher was always there to help me.”
“My advice for new International students would be, always be positive, study hard and most of all enjoy the experience.”
