Chisholm has helped many students turn their ideas into real businesses, and Max is one of those success stories, proof of what’s possible when passion meets the right support.

With a natural talent for business and a passion for design, Max has built a career that blends both. And now, he’s giving back to the next generation of creatives.

Max got his first hands-on business experience at a young age, when he opened a café in Dromana. It quickly became a local favourite. Even after he sold it, the café continues to thrive – a sign of Max’s early business instincts. Running the café gave him confidence in his abilities and sparked a desire to strengthen his business skills.

To build on that experience, Max enrolled in a Certificate III in Micro Business Operations. At the time, this small business course was run through programs now part of Chisholm’s Skills and Jobs Centre (SJC). The course gave him step-by-step training in planning, budgeting, marketing, and daily operations. Supportive teachers and a structured approach helped him gain the knowledge to explore new creative directions.

Using the skills he learned through his course, Max launched Barnacle Studios, a creative business on the Mornington Peninsula. Barnacle focuses on design, illustration, and visual merchandising, and also runs a curated exhibition window to showcase local artistic talent. For Max, Barnacle is the perfect blend of creativity, business strategy, and community connection.

In a special full-circle moment, Max now gives back to Chisholm students. Last year, he offered display space in Barnacle’s exhibition window to a top-performing student, giving them early exposure and a taste of the creative industry.

Max hopes his journey inspires others who are ready to start something of their own. With the right support, the right training, and a willingness to begin, anyone can bring their ideas to life.
