Supporting learning and belonging
Commencing in March 2026, this project has brought together improved facilities, thoughtful design and cultural recognition to better support both student learning and connection to community, culture and support. The result is spaces that are not only functional, but meaningful and support students in their academic journeys while strengthening a sense of belonging on campus.
A new space for connection and community
Walagunh Yulendji, meaning ‘Knowledge is mixing’ in Bunurong language, is the name of the newly built First Nations Engagement Centre. Designed in close alignment with cultural values, this purpose-built space provides a safe, welcoming environment for First Nations students on campus. It offers a place to connect with community, study, collaborate or simply spend quiet time in a culturally affirming setting.
The centre has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the surrounding Bunurong landscape, with a calming palette of blues and greens representing coastal and grassland environments. Every element of the space has been carefully considered to foster a sense of belonging and respect.
The project also reflects a strong commitment to supporting First Nations businesses. Construction was led by Barpa, an Indigenous-owned company, while much of the furniture has been sourced from Winya, further embedding cultural authenticity and community connection into the space.
Enhancing the library experience
Alongside the Walagunh Yulendji Centre, the Library and Learning Centre has undergone a series of upgrades to improve accessibility, usability and the overall student experience. A new circulation desk has been installed to enhance service delivery and make it easier for students to connect with library staff.
A dedicated back-of-house workspace has also been created for technical and support services while maintaining close proximity to the main library floor. This enables more efficient operations without losing the connection to students.
Updates to the main entryway and improved signage are being introduced to create a more welcoming arrival experience and encourage greater engagement with library services.
