Casey had always imagined a career where she could combine her love for water and a strong desire to help others. So, when the opportunity arose to undertake a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation traineeship at the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre (BALC), she didn’t hesitate to enrol.
Beginning her traineeship exposed Casey to new challenges that nudged her beyond her comfort zone. While initially shy, Casey developed strong skills in communication, resilience and conflict management. Through training, Casey demonstrated what a capable and trusted leader, and she is now more outgoing and confident in her own abilities.
Working at BALC, Casey discovered her love for teaching children. She takes pride in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of those in her care. Through her positive and contagious energy, Casey has made a lasting impression on both her peers and the families she supports.
Casey is a strong advocate for inclusivity and accessibility, as she lives with her own disability. Guided by the motto ‘don’t let anything hold you back from what you want to achieve’, she goes out of her way to ensure that her students feel comfortable. In one case, she offered a student private lessons because they felt uncomfortable learning in a group setting.
Casey’s professional excellence and ability to form genuine connections with others were recognised in the 2025 Apprentice Training Awards, when she was a finalist in the Disability Achievement category.
When Casey completes her course, she would like to earn her lifeguard qualifications and teach swimming to babies and people with disabilities.
Casey is a finalist in the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Trainee of the Year category.
