Enrolling in the Diploma of Early Childhood Education at Chisholm helped Geesha find her spark. Throughout her studies, she credits quality training and strong industry connections for helping her discover her passion for working with children.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Geesha came to Australia with a strong interest in building a career in early childhood education. She discovered Chisholm’s Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (international) and felt it offered the ideal combination of practical learning and industry experience to set her up for success in the sector. Geesha chose Chisholm because of its strong reputation for education and care, the wide range of support services available, and the encouragement she received from friends who told her the teachers were exceptional.
Throughout her course, Geesha has learnt about children’s development from three months to six years, building skills in interaction, play‑based learning, and classroom management. The Diploma provides deeper knowledge and introduces leadership capabilities that prepare students for future roles such as Room Leader and Centre Director.
Jennifer Gilbert, Teacher of Early Childhood programs at Chisholm Institute, explains that international students typically begin with the Certificate III, which introduces them to working with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. From there, many progress to the Diploma for more advanced study and leadership development, with a clear pathway into further qualifications for those who wish to continue their studies.
Jennifer says that International students blend with their classmates and form strong bonds that become a tight‑knit community. Jen shares that it is “this sense of belonging helps them build confidence and achieve their goals”.
For Geesha, the support has not only come from teachers. Chisholm’s placement team helped her secure professional placements close to where she lives, allowing her to build relationships with Centre Directors and Educators. She also formed strong friendships with her classmates - especially other educators studying alongside her - who helped her regain confidence and feel at home.
After graduating, Geesha hopes to become a qualified educator at a centre, and in the future, a room leader.
Geesha’s advice to international students thinking about Chisholm is simple.
"Go for it! You will meet many people, build lots of friendships, and will always have support as an international student. You will find your community and never feel alone. There’s always support for you."
