An Intermediate Lost Wax Casting Workshop

Design and create your own sterling silver ring featuring a cast-in-place gemstone in this advanced, hands-on short course.

This workshop builds on foundational wax carving or build-up skills and introduces the exciting technique of stone-in-place casting — where a compatible gemstone is secured directly into your wax model before the ring is cast in sterling silver.

Held in a relaxed and supportive studio environment, this course is ideal for participants ready to extend their wax-working knowledge and explore more complex design possibilities.

Across two sessions, you’ll move from constructing your ring in wax to refining and polishing your completed sterling silver piece.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

• Advanced build-up wax techniques to accommodate a gemstone

• How to calculate correct stone placement and depth

• Selecting and securing a casting-compatible stone

• Preparing your wax model for professional casting

• Understanding the principles and limitations of stone-in-place casting

• Sanding and refining cast sterling silver while protecting the stone

• Filing and polishing to achieve a professional finish

In the first session, you’ll construct your wax ring, position and secure your gemstone, and prepare the piece for casting.

Your design will then be professionally cast in sterling silver.

In the second session, you’ll refine, sand and polish your cast ring, revealing your finished stone-in-place design.

With guidance from our experienced facilitator, you’ll deepen your technical understanding while creating a sculptural ring that showcases both metal and stone.

You’ll also receive helpful notes and supplier information so you can continue exploring advanced wax techniques beyond the course.

• Includes: Jeweller’s wax, compatible casting-grade gemstone, sterling silver casting (up to specified weight), and all tools and safety equipment (safety glasses and apron provided).

Whether you're ready to challenge your wax skills or explore the precision of stone-in-place casting, this workshop will leave you inspired — and wearing a one-of-a-kind sterling silver ring where metal has formed seamlessly around the stone you carefully positioned yourself.
