Physical: Students are expected to have a basic level of physical fitness. In particular, the mobility to complete the following tasks:
• Kneel on the ground to undertake 2 minutes of CPR
• Walk and stand for periods of time unassisted
• Have a level of strength to assist with moving patients (push exertion)
• The stamina to complete a number of tasks in a limited period of time.

Cognitive/Emotional: The cognitive demand for students completing the health service assistance course requires:
• Strong level of communication (in particular verbal /nonverbal and dealing behaviors of concern).
• Understanding one’s own emotional response (at times the HSA content covers sensitive topics)
• Ability to manage one’s own time (students need to keep up to date with written assessments and observations).
• Ability to contribute to class discussion and potentially present findings in a class environment
• Cognitive ability to understand theories of infection control
• Cognitive stability to withstand potential stressors such as people with behaviours of concern, time management within the role of HSA, time pressures and meeting expectations of employers / teaching staff

Industry: the following skills are paramount in being a successful HSA worker:
• Strong communication skills, including active listening
• Ability to work within a dynamic team of specialists
• Take instructions and clarify with supervisors when unsure
• A confidence to speak up when unsure
• A clear understanding of scope of practice
• Level of physical ability to complete tasks in a fast-paced environment

Language, literacy and numeracy

You are required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy skills test before course commencement. This will determine course suitability and if you may need additional support.

We use an approved online skills review tool to determine your language, literacy and numeracy skills within the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

Below are the levels required for this course:

• Language and literacy: 3 (Working level 4)
• Numeracy: 3 (Working level 4)

Students may be taken at one level below with LNSUPPORT.

Practical placement

To be able to complete required assessment tasks, students will need to attend a minimum of 8 hours of placement; however, students are encouraged to attend 40 hours of practical placement to hone skills learnt throughout the course.

Simulated work environment

Your learning will take place in classrooms and a simulated nursing lab.

Our nursing lab is set up to mimic a real-life workplace. Equipment you may work with may include:
• wheelchairs
• hospital beds
• lifting machine
• standing machine
• mobility aids.
