Changing course and finding purpose in landscape construction

Liv thought horticulture was the right fit when she first enrolled at Chisholm. But after discovering a passion for construction and receiving guidance from her teachers, she realised her strengths lay elsewhere. Now, nearing her second year as a landscape construction apprentice, she’s thriving in a supportive small business, building skills across multiple trades and working towards her dream of owning her own business.

While working on a farm with produce and livestock, Liv developed an interest in horticulture and agriculture. Drawn to the opportunity to try something new through the Free TAFE initiative, she enrolled in Chisholm’s Certificate III in Horticulture.

“I went into horticulture thinking I would never do a trade,” Liv says. "But once I started the course, I realised how much I enjoyed the practical side of it.”

As Liv’s interests evolved, Chisholm teacher Shaun recognised that landscape construction better matched her strengths and career goals. With his support, she completed her course and started a Certificate III in Landscape Construction apprenticeship. Shaun encouraged Liv to attend classes in person, helping her build confidence and get the most out of the hands-on learning environment.

Today, Liv works on residential projects across the Mornington Peninsula, gaining experience in paving, bluestone, cobblestones and slab laying. She particularly enjoys bricklaying and blocklaying, embracing both the practical and theoretical aspects of her training. “I look through my timetable and get excited about all the different units. The best part is that I can do a little bit of every trade,” she says.

Working in a small team alongside her best friend and supportive employer, Liv values the independence she’s given on site. She credits her workplace for helping her grow, noting that smaller companies can sometimes offer more opportunity and support. As the only female in her class, Liv has learned to confidently put herself out there while staying true to who she is. “You can still wear makeup and wear pink. You don’t have to be grubby,” she says.

Outside of work, Liv enjoys restoring her 60 Series Land Cruiser. The hands-on skills gained through her trade have given her the confidence to take on mechanical work. What started as a passion project has become another way for Liv to apply and strengthen her practical skills.

Looking ahead, Liv dreams of combining her passions by starting her own business in farming and landscaping. Her teacher Shaun believes her future is bright. “I can see her running her own business and hiring more female apprentices,” he says. “She’ll run her own business one day, definitely.”

Looking back, she’s grateful she didn’t feel locked into her original plan. Finding the right fit has given her a career she genuinely enjoys. Her advice to others? “Stick to it, give it time, and don’t be afraid to find an employer who truly values you.”
