The Australian Government Department of Employment says there were over 60,000 automotive service mechanics employed in 2022. There is also a steady demand for skilled workers due to the increasing number of vehicles on the road. As an automotive light vehicle mechanic, you’ll develop high-demand skills and enjoy problem-solving in a rewarding career with strong prospects and personal satisfaction.
On successful completion of the Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology apprenticeship you’ll be qualified for roles such as an automotive tradesperson or light vehicle motor mechanic.
In your apprenticeship you’ll gain real-world skills by working with an employer full time. At the same time, you’ll learn from industry-experienced teachers at our state-of-the-art automotive workshops.
You’ll get hands-on experience servicing everything from batteries and transmissions to engines. Your skills in petrol fuel, air conditioning, and braking systems will be developed. You'll also learn about workplace safety and equipment.

Inherent requirements
• Minimum age requirement: 15
• Of school leaving age or have a transition from school form.

Language, literacy and numeracy
complete the course, while in the workshop you may be required to:
• Be on your feet for periods of time
• Use hand tools and power tools
• Be exposed to noisy environments
• Be reasonably fit as some lifting may be required
• Have good eyesight and hearing as students will have to visually inspect vehicles and listen for unusual noisesYou are required to complete a language, literacy and numeracy skills test before course commencement. This will determine course suitability and if you may need additional support.
We use an approved online skills review tool to determine your language, literacy and numeracy skills within the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

Practical placement
There are no practical placement requirements for this course.

Simulated work environment
Automotive workshop. The automotive workshop is considered a real work environment with personal protective equipment (PPE) required at all times. PPE consists of long work pants, long-sleeve workshirt and steel-capped work boots. We will provide you with safety glasses for some practical tasks.
Dress code
• Approved PPE/work wear is required when in the workshop
• Long hair must be tied up.
• Nails must be kept short, no acrylic nails.
• Jewellery/Piercings – kept to a minimum.
• Personal hygiene – showering and wearing of deodorant is expected.
• Student attire must not breach any anti-discrimination legislation. -

Chisholm courses are subject to minimum and maximum group numbers. Courses may be cancelled or postponed if minimum numbers are not achieved by the start date of the course. Courses may close prior to the start date if the maximum numbers are reached. In that situation, eligible applicants will be offered a place in the next available intake.
