Building a career: An engineering pathway

Whether tinkering with cars, fishing, or spending time outdoors, Damien has always loved working with his hands. So, when it came to choosing a career, he knew it had to be just as practical. In Year 12, he enrolled in a Certificate II in Engineering Studies at Chisholm to explore his options.

That first step confirmed engineering was the right path. It led him to an apprenticeship at a local manufacturing company and back to Chisholm to complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade.

In addition to developing his technical skills, Damien’s courses helped sharpen his critical thinking and problem-solving abilities – skills he sees as essential to his career success. He also says his supportive teachers played a key role in his journey.

"Even when I had a question about work, my teachers were happy to guide me whenever they could."

To expand his opportunities even further, Damien completed a Certificate IV in Engineering – CNC Programming alongside his apprenticeship.

"I wanted to progress and deepen my knowledge in the field as it's something that will help me with my future career and even my current job."

Today, as a fitter and turner, Damien is making an impact on major projects, from bridges to skyscrapers and universities.

"My work has me in the architecture sector, not only around Melbourne but also in various places around the world."

Looking ahead, Damien plans to keep building his skills, whether through on-the-job experience, further study, or short courses and workshops.
