Arthur is building the future he always wanted

Arthur made the bold decision to pursue his long-held passion for carpentry, and it’s a decision that has already paid off. Now completing his apprenticeship at Chisholm, he has embraced the challenge of starting fresh. As a 2026 winner of the Master Builders Developing Leader Award, he is on a strong path to a future in construction.

Despite holding a secure and well-paid foreman role in civil construction, in 2022 Arthur made the life-changing decision to step away and follow his dream of becoming a carpenter. Originally from France, he was drawn to Australia’s timber style of building, which is different from the concrete construction he was used to back home. Knowing Chisholm from previous training, he then enrolled in a Certificate III in Carpentry to begin his new journey.

Arthur’s experience at Chisholm has been both rewarding and transformative. He credits his teachers, Marc and Trevor, for making a significant impact on his learning. “Their knowledge and kindness made the course really enjoyable,” he says. Studying in a second language presented its challenges, but the supportive environment helped him build confidence. One project that stood out was constructing a pitched roof from scratch. This was a task that required precision, planning and focus. “Thinking through every cut and step made it incredibly rewarding,” he reflects.

Throughout his training, Arthur has developed essential skills that extend beyond carpentry. For him, resilience has been the most valuable lesson. Learning to adapt, overcome issues, and push forward through challenges has shaped both his work and personal life. “It’s something I use every day,” he says.

Arthur’s hard work and commitment were recognised when he received the Developing Leader Award at the Master Builders Victoria Apprentice of the Year Awards, which celebrate the state’s top building and construction apprentices for their skill, commitment and excellence in their trade. The award recognises apprentices who demonstrate outstanding leadership qualities and make a positive impact throughout their apprenticeship.

Initially surprised, he says the achievement validated the sacrifices he made, leaving a high-paying job, supporting his family and dedicating himself fully to his new career. “It made me proud and showed me I made the right decision.”

Arthur believes his success comes down to his mindset. He is passionate and committed to becoming the best tradesperson he can be. Always eager to learn, he spends time outside of work researching new building techniques and industry innovations. “This isn’t just a career, it’s a lifestyle,” he says.

For those considering a similar path, Arthur’s advice is simple: keep going. “It’s hard but very rewarding. Ask for help when you need it and don’t give up. It’s worth it.” With his determination and passion, Arthur is building not just structures, but a future he truly believes in.
