Downer and Chisholm have developed a tailor made Certificate II in Engineering Studies pre-apprenticeship to be delivered from the Downer Newport facility.

This course will suit people living in Melbourne's Western suburbs, unemployed, transitioning workers, automotive workers, youth, indigenous applicants and females are strongly encouraged to apply.

Downer are offering twelve scholarship placements to eligible candidates to the value of $750 through the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation to cover the cost of the course fees. Students must secure a place in the course and will then be eligible to apply for a scholarship. Applicants will be interviewed before and after undertaking the course to ensure suitability.

During the course, you’ll learn how to create engineering drawings using computer-aided systems; handle engineering materials and tools; perform basic machining processes; produce basic engineering components and products; and comply with workplace safety regulations.

Those that achieve a 100% attendance record, successfully complete the units within the 10 week timeframe and meet a certain eligibility criteria may be given the opportunity to interview for one of 25 Downer apprenticeships. The apprenticeships offered will be either the Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (MEM30205) or Certificate III Engineering – Electrical Trade (MEM30405) commencing in 2018.
