A few years after studying at the Chisholm Sports Academy, Ned Weideman is still shooting goals.

Ned completed a Diploma of Sport and Recreation Management / Diploma of Sport (Development and Coaching) SIS50115 / SIS50319 at the academy and says he utilises the skills he gained during the course for his work with two basketball associations.

“It has really helped me from an event planning standpoint, running events to promote the brands I’m working with,” Ned says.

At the academy students undertake a rigorous schedule. The days start with player analysis in the auditorium, followed by on court drills and game play, then on-court coaching, while in the afternoons they knuckle down for some theory including exercise science, law and management.

Ned says it was the basketball training that initially attracted him to the academy, but ultimately he enjoyed the holistic approach to learning and found the theory very helpful as well.

“The balance between sport and study was very easy to maintain as often the two intertwined,” he says.

“A lot of the coursework was interesting and engaging as sport was the centre focus of all units. Additionally many of the studies directly influence sport by being able to implement concepts such as leadership and management and knowledge such as anatomy and bio-mechanics.”

His basketball game improved as well, and Ned is still training and playing with the Frankston Youth League.

“They (the Chisholm coaches) helped me develop in every aspect of my game both mentally and physically,” he says.

Ned says he also values the friendships he made at Chisholm.

"Being part of a group that was like-minded and driven was a very enjoyable experience which galvanised friendships and relationships that are still maintained to this day which is something I did not anticipate,” he says.

Ned has coached many children’s basketball teams over the years and says the high quality coaching he received at Chisholm helped him to greatly improve his own coaching style.

His next goal is to study a Bachelor of Education so he can continue to help kids to enjoy sport.
