Tradies view the future

September 2014

Chisholm's Frankston campus was transformed into a celebration of trade careers as industry leaders showcased the latest in technology and career pathways for students at the Chisholm Trade Careers Expo yesterday.

Bunnings brought the sausages and bread, the Red Bull street team brought the tunes, and Chisholm provided the career advisors and future trade stars to the event at the Frankston Campus. But it was the tools and technology that really excited the apprentices.

“It’s been a fantastic day overall. There’s lots of free stuff and we wanted to check out all the new tools,” said Kerry Eckenroth who is currently studying Electrotechnology at Chisholm.

The Trade Careers Expo built on Chisholm's long-standing relationship with Bunnings, with many suppliers and manufacturers joining in today's celebration of trade careers and showcasing the latest tools and technology.

"We've been doing tradie breakfasts with Bunnings for a long time and we decided to bring the concept on campus,” said Adam Laxton, Senior Educator in Construction & Building at Chisholm. “We’ve been fortunate to get so much support from manufacturers and suppliers to the trades industries who are here today showing students the future of trades.”

Current apprentices, students and others considering a career in trades were given career insights and course advice whilst speaking to people in the industry about opportunities and developments in building and construction.

Carpentry Australia’s Rosie Chambers commented, “It’s been a great opportunity for students to engage with key people and to find out what’s available to them. It’s a great overview of the trades industries and really opens the students’ eyes to the varied career opportunities out there.”

"It also puts them in touch with potential employers, or for younger students, access to teachers with a wealth of knowledge. They’re such a nice team here at Chisholm,” continues Chambers.

Chisholm offers a variety of trade qualifications across its seven campuses.
