Berwick Technical Education Centre (TEC) is a unique learning environment, designed exclusively for young adults under 20, who want to gain a qualification that will lead them to a job or further study, outside of the traditional secondary school system.

Berwick TEC offers young adults a way to work through Year 11 and 12 VCAL, and study towards an industry qualification in a way that promotes handson learning and developing industry-specific skills, mixing regular class room learning with practical skills training outside of the classroom.

This helps you get a qualification in your future career quicker, as well as creating opportunities for an apprenticeship, head directly into the workforce or move onto achieving a higher qualification with a pathway through to a Chisholm certificate or diploma.

Feel safe and supported

Most important is the commitment at Berwick TEC to provide you with a safe environment where you can discover and develop your talent. There’s plenty of support including a dedicated youth worker and supportive teachers. Everyone is valued and respected as an individual.

Accelerate your learning with the latest technology

Technology is everywhere at Berwick TEC. It becomes a natural part of all you do and the way you interact. You focus on core skills with your teacher and the technology helps to accelerate and make your learning more enjoyable.

Berwick TEC has interactive whiteboards and wireless laptop computers for student use in all classrooms.

There are a couple of options if you want to study with Berwick TEC. You can choose to do VCAL or a pre apprenticeship course depending on what career you are looking to move into.

VCAL courses

VCAL is the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning. It’s a way for students to do industry-specific training as part of a Year 11 (VCAL Intermediate) or Year 12 (VCAL Senior) secondary certificate. Like the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), VCAL is an accredited senior secondary certificate but is more ‘hands-on’. If you prefer to learn by doing things, rather than reading from a text book, this approach can really help you succeed in Year 11 and 12.

Industry skills training is completed over a full year of study and is combined with core studies in numeracy, literacy, personal development skills and practical work-related skills. At Berwick TEC, most VCAL courses include a full industry certificate as part of VCAL.

Some of the industries we collaborate with are Building and Construction, Plumbing, Electrical, Landscaping, Art and Design, Hair and Beauty, Health, Community Services and Sport and Recreation.

Pre-apprenticeship courses

The TEC offers you the opportunity to move straight into a full time, stand-alone pre-apprenticeship (without VCAL).

A pre-apprenticeship prepares you to become an apprentice or trainee and helps you develop the entry level skills to get a job. Students do not need an employer to do a pre-apprenticeship.

Successful completion of a relevant pre-apprenticeship will reduce the term of an apprenticeship or traineeship. What’s more, employers looking to take on an apprentice often look favourably on students

who have already completed a pre-apprenticeship. These courses are all full time and are completed over 8 to 10 weeks depending on the course. All pre-apprenticeship courses at the Berwick TEC are run in our unique building site area that simulates a real, modern work site where different trades learn

their skills alongside each other and often work on common projects. Industry standard Work Health and Safety (WHS) requirements are practised on site. The TEC is often involved with community projects that allow students to gain experience on a ‘live’ work site.
