    ‘Excellarating’ management qualifications

It didn’t take long for San Remo health industry worker Anita Leyden to realise she was on a winner with the innovative new Excellerate management program delivered by the Southern and Coastal TAFE Alliance in Wonthaggi and Leongatha.

“The course was very practical and can be easily applied in your day-to-day work. I certainly feel a lot more confident about what I do,” she said.

Offering the Diplomas of Business Management and Human Resource Management, Excellarate allows local time sparse professionals to fast-track nationally accredited qualifications without having to travel outside of their region.

A significant new type of learning experience in further education,  students study a series of management topics that feature work based projects, discussion forums and diagnostic assessment for prior learning; a process that recognises existing skills and knowledge.

Several interactive forums – held over a 12 month period – provide students with the chance to improve their managerial and/or human resource skills with respect to their current role, or to move on into a more responsible position.

Anita, with a background in administration, transport and the complimentary health industry, has worked for the Bass Coast Health Service in San Remo for the past five years.

Responsible for two specific job roles – Coordinator, Community Services Team and Health Promotion Coordinator – Anita highlighted how particular units within the course were helpful to her work.

“I found Marketing for Internal Customers and Managing Meetings to Engage Staff particularly interesting,” she said.

Finding the whole program very flexible, Anita also regarded the Recognition of Prior Learning process as a significant plus:

“Sometimes we don’t personally acknowledge our capabilities, so to have your skills identified and recognised was most beneficial.

“Overall, the program consolidated my previous knowledge and experience. I didn’t have a formal qualification in management so ensuring that I was up with current industry practice was great.”

“It opens up many opportunities”, she said. “If I were to look for work elsewhere, having this formal qualification would certainly put me in a good position.”
