Study Options

Everybody’s situation is different, so we make our learning options as flexible as possible to let you choose how, when and where you want to study. While full time, on campus study is the norm, there are many courses you can do part time.

There are many courses you can do off campus, communicating with Chisholm teachers by email, telephone and correspondence or through web forums. Others are available online, and some let you progress at your own pace. Chisholm also designs training you can do right in the workplace.

See the course descriptions, and ask Chisholm’s enrolment advisors what options are available for the courses you are interested in.

Please note that Employability Skills Summaries for training package qualifications can be downloaded from http://employabilityskills.training.com.au.

Certificate Courses

These are ways to develop work skills in stages. Certificates I-III help you develop basic skills and knowledge for the workforce across many industries. The prerequisites are generally lower than for Certificate IV and Diploma studies. They can also lead to further study, such as a TAFE Diploma.

Certificate IV courses give you sound general or workplace skills as well as a knowledge base that incorporates theoretical concepts. They generally take one year to complete and are the first year of a Diploma.

Diploma Courses

A Diploma gives you advanced skills and knowledge across a broad range of technical and/or management functions. Diploma graduates can continue on to Advanced Diploma or apply for university admission with advanced standing.

An Advanced Diploma gives you more specialised skills and knowledge of greater complexity where you are able to appraise, synthesise, manage and evaluate workplace situations. Graduates can gain advanced standing in Bachelor Degree courses at university.

Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses require up to two years full time study, and prepare you for employment at a professional level.

As well as increasing your chances of getting into the university course of your choice, your TAFE qualification means you may be eligible to receive credit towards your university degree. Chisholm has some special relationships with universities. For more information, go to University Pathways.

Graduate Certificate Courses

Graduate Certificates are designed for diploma or degree graduates of other disciplines (or people with substantial work experience), who wish to further their knowledge and broaden their skills.  Click here for more details on the Graduate Certificate courses Chisholm has to offer, or send us an equiry email here.

VCE & VCAL for non school students

If you are no longer at school, you can apply direct to Chisholm to study for certificates acknowledging you have successfully completed your senior secondary education - The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL). Find out more about completing your VCE or VCAL with Chisholm - go to VCE and VCAL.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Apprenticeships and Traineeships are a way to earn while you learn. They combine employment and training. You have a contract with an employer that allows you to study nationally recognised qualifications whilst obtaining valuable industry experience. You are paid while you work and your employer is subsidised by the government. For more information contact the New Apprenticeship Hotline 1800 639 629 or find out more at Australian Apprenticeships.

Pre-Apprenticeships

A pre-apprenticeship program introduces you to the skills required by industry. Gaining these skills can help you secure employment as an apprentice. You don’t need to have a job to do a pre-apprenticeship; the pre-apprenticeship program will help you to find that job!

New Enterprise Incentive Scheme

If you are unemployed, registered as a full-time job seeker, and receiving Newstart or other eligible Centrelink payments, you may be able to train and establish a new business. The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) can give you 8 weeks free training in small business management and 12 months income support. To find out more go to New Enterprise Incentive Scheme.
