Short term loans
Some items may have a shorter loan period of seven days due to their demand. Two of these items may be borrowed.
Reserve Collection
Items in this collection are in high demand. Two items may be borrowed for two hours use within the library.
Renewals
You may renew the items you have on loan up to three times. After the third renewal items need to be returned to the library and reshelved before further loans are allowed. Renewals may be done online via the catalogue, in person, by phone, fax or email. To renew items after hours by phone, please leave a message on the voicemail stating your name and Library barcode number.
Items may not be renewed when:
- Another borrower has requested the item
- Your items are overdue by 30 days or more
- You have fines of $20.00 or more
Holds
You can place holds on items using the on-line catalogue. You will be notified by email or post when your hold item is available for collection.
Returns
Items, except equipment, may be returned to any Chisholm campus library. Return items should be put through the return chute located at either the Loans Desk or at the entrance to the library.
Equipment should be handed to staff at the Loans Desk at the campus from where it was borrowed.
Berwick, Cranbourne, Dandenong and Frankston libraries have an external chute for after-hours returns.
Printing/Photocopying
Black and white and colour photocopiers/printers are available at all campus libraries. To copy and print you need to add credit to your account using your ID card and either the coin or EFTPOS stations (debit card only) located in each of the campus libraries. Charges for printing and copying are located at each of the copier/printers.
Computer facilities and email
Computer facilities are available at all libraries. To use email, the Internet, printing and applications you need to login into the Institute network.
Your login is the first letter of your last name then your ID number
Your password is your date of birth in the format ddmmyyyy.

Students must abide by Institute Procedure Information Technology Usage QMS 506 which is displayed in the computing areas of each library.
Borrowing from other TAFE and University libraries
Chisholm students, apart from VCE and short course students, are eligible to join the CAVAL reciprocal borrowing scheme. This allows you to borrow items from other Victorian TAFE institutes and universities.
Ask at the Loans Desk at your campus library for more details and to register for a CAVAL borrowing card.
If you are studying at a TAFE that is interstate, a national reciprocal borrowing scheme is in operation. Please enquire at your campus library.
Inter-library loans
If the Library does not hold the item you are looking for it may be possible to obtain it from another library. Items sent from non-TAFE libraries incur a fee of $13.20.
Alternatively, library staff can advise which library has the item and you may then borrow it using the CAVAL borrowing scheme.
Fines for overdue items (excluding equipment)
Fines are 20c per day, per overdue item. Fines stop accruing from the day items are returned or renewed. Higher fines occur for late return of equipment.
You can continue to borrow if your fines are less than $20.00. If your fines reach $20.00 or more the whole amount must be paid.
The Institute will withhold course results when fines are $20.00 or more at the conclusion of a course.
Overdue, Lost or Damaged Items
Borrowers receive a notice in the mail soon after items are due. One reminder notice is sent. An invoice for the replacement cost of the items is sent when items are 30 days overdue. These items can no longer be renewed and borrowing rights will be suspended. Items must be returned or, if lost, their replacement cost paid. This includes an administration charge.
Borrowing rights will be restored upon return of overdue items and payment of outstanding fines.
The Institute will withhold course results when items are overdue at the conclusion of a course.
Conduct in the Library
Students are expected to abide by Institute Procedure QMS 512 Library. Borrowing Terms and Conditions and Rules of General Conduct are displayed at all libraries.
